Gay soldiers

I feel like the question of gays in the military is this never ending thing in the US. It dates back to 1993 when President Clinton, someone who was supposed to be progressive, decided he either didn't want to stand up for what he believed or he really had a discriminatory view on gay people and went with the ‘don't ask, don't tell policy.' In other words, just don't admit that you're a ‘homo or faggot' and we'll let you put your life on the line for us, as well as give you the cushy job of killing other human beings.

Finally, President Obama is starting to stand up for himself and do the things that he believes in and it would appear he is going to reverse that silly decision.

I mean, come on! If you are in a foxhole in some Middle Eastern desert, do you really give two hoots as to whether the person next to you, in their private lives back in the civilian world is gay? I also heard this morning that the average age of the 5,000 people on an aircraft carrier is 19 and ½ years. That generation certainly doesn't care about the ‘gay' issue any longer. You need only watch MTV or any of the teen network shows to see that.

So please, President Obama, and Congress or whoever else has to get involved in this, do the right thing and make it OK for our brave young men and women to not have to hide their true identity during their service to our country.

I am an Army veteran. I did not care when I was in if my fellow soldier was gay, bisexual or straight. I still think all people should be able to serve their country as long as they can perform the job.Report Abuse

Well I'm hardly the UK expert but I believe it has been okay for gay men to serve in our military for the last ten years. And it doesn't appear to be significant in any way at all. Otherwise we’d hear more about it!Report Abuse

What is the story in the UK on this? What's the policy there? And Australia? Anyone?Report Abuse

The thing that makes me laugh is the implication that straight men aren't "safe" with these gays around. Ha! Not that it's remotely true, but haven't women been putting up with unwanted advances (and worse) for centuries?Report Abuse

@Noname: Unbelievably I was just reading about the statistics of women in the military and defence contract work who are raped or assaulted. (News Junkie) An American woman "was in Iraq in 2005 when seven Halliburton/KBR employees drugged and brutally gang-raped her. Her injuries were so extensive that she had lacerations to her vagina and anus, her breast implants were ruptured, and her pectoral muscles torn. The response of KBR was to lock her in a shipping container with only a bed, and to deny her food, water, and medical treatment. The rape kit that was taken after she regained consciousness was mysteriously lost. This crime eventually led to an amendment being added to the defense appropriations bill by Sen. Al Franken (D-MN). This would require defense contractors to allow their employees access to US courts in cases of rape or sexual assault, regardless of where they are stationed. The 30 Republican senators voted against this amendment are currently being humiliated on the Republicans for Rape website and by John Stewart on the Daily Show." Ugh!Report Abuse
