We love lady geeks
here at PowderRoomGraffiti - those women who are technically savvy, and as
confident with their iPhone, laptop and digital camera as any man on the
planet. But Suzanne Kantra takes this to an entirely new level. The former technology
editor for Martha Stewart's properties and ‘Popular Science' magazine (the
bastion of geekdom) can certainly mix it with the top techies. Last year she
set up Techlicious.com, a female-friendly review site, offering women advice
about technology that is neither snarky nor dumbed-down.
The Basics
1. Name
Suzanne Kantra
2. Web/Blog address if applicable
www.techlicious.com
3. Where do you live?
a. Are you from there originally?
b. Where else have you lived?
I am from Connecticut. I also lived in New
Jersey, Michigan, and Indiana and currently live in New York City.
4. What is your living situation?
a. Partner?
b. Kids?
Married with three children
5. Job?
a. How long?
b. What other jobs have you had?
For the last year I have been working on
launching and running Techlicious.com. Prior to that I worked as the Technology
Editor for Martha Stewart's print, radio and TV properties and as the
Technology Editor for 'Popular Science' magazine.
The Tough Ones
1. Summarize your entire life in 10 words or
less.
Blessed with a loving husband, great kids and
an interesting job.
2. Tell us what your typical day is like
currently.
I work from home, so I get the kids out the
door, work for several hours, take some time with the kids for dinner, homework
and bedtime, work for several more hours.
3. Tell us about the person that has had the most
profound impact on your life:
a. During the last five years
b. From the very beginning
a) My husband has been very supportive and
helped me develop the confidence to start my own business.
b) My mother was always there to help guide me
through the difficult times and helped me develop the ability to look at situations
from multiple viewpoints - there's usually a positive side to any situation if
you look for it.
4. What is the greatest trauma you have ever
experienced in your life and how did that impact you?
I can't say that I've been really traumatized in my life. I suppose the
car crash with my mother (she was driving) made me realize I could die. The
state trooper who arrived on the scene told us that he had been afraid to look
in the car because he couldn't see how anyone could have survived.
5. What is the greatest joy or achievement you
have ever experienced in your life and how did that impact you?
My greatest achievement was starting my own
publishing venture, Techlicious.com. It's given me a new perspective on who I
can be in the working world.
6. Let's pretend your life is a
blank slate for 1 year - no partner, kids, job,
baggage of any sort. You can reinvent yourself completely and take a year to do
exactly what you want without any consequence to your current life. How would
you spend that year?
I would travel to all the places I've wanted to visit.
7. What (if anything) are you able to do better
now than at any other time in your life?
Not care as much about what other people
think - diaper changes in the back of the car, asking to use the bathroom, etc.
