I hate to
mention this, but in the not-too-distant future we are going to turn the clocks
back and gain an extra hour. Now, while all this is well and good, I don't
think it's nearly enough. How about gaining an extra hour every week or how
about every single day? Why, with the Christmas and Hanukkah holidays coming
upon us like a speeding train, who couldn't use a little extra time?
Guy Fawkes, and the ghosts and goblins of
Halloween all pounce upon us at summer's end, and before they are tucked safely
away, it's time to trim the Christmas tree, dust off the cookbooks, and e-mail
seasonal wishes to everyone you've ever known.
Not to
mention queueing up to buy your kids that ‘have-to-have' iPod they've been
talking about for the past few months, your husband that made-to-order golf
club and your mother that book by her favorite author.
Add to this
the anticipation of the big family dinner. You know the one where everyone knows a secret about Uncle Bill, but no
one is allowed to say it out loud. Until, of course, Great Aunt Gertie has too
much sherry and brings it up. And then all hell breaks loose.
Where you
ponder for days over what to wear because this year you're going to give your
cousin's sleazy husband something to leer at, but then you don't want to give
Grandma Linda a heart attack.
Shopping,
cooking, waiting, rushing.
All this
culminates with the one thing we could easily do without: Stress.
How ironic
is it that the time of the year when everyone should be giving out love and
joy, often drives us to that extra glass of wine or one Prozac too many?
Or maybe
not. Perhaps this year we can relieve our stress by talking it out with each
other online.
At 2:00 am
when you can't sleep because your brain won't stop worrying, just won't shut
down, instead of taking an extra sleeping pill which will leave you groggy
until noon the next day, you can get on the Internet and communicate with other
women who are experiencing the same feelings.
You may
still be tired but you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you're not
alone.
What do you
think?
